Built in 1639 and expanded in 1675 by Spanish and Portugese Jews. This Synagogue was the largest in Europe at the time seating over 1200 men and 400 women. In the evening 613 candles on magnificent chandeliers illuminate the interior. This same community that originally fled Spain and Portugal to Holland would later establish communities in the Americas including Curacao, St Thomas, Recife, New Port, Rhode Island, and New York.
